5 Best Portable Griddles of 2023 for Camping

Going camping? On a trip? Tailgating with your friends? Doesn’t matter where or how you visit the great outdoors, taking a griddle with you will transform even the most remote place into an outdoor kitchen.

I personally prefer a griddle over a grill when going outside because of its versatility. You can cook much more stuff on a griddle than on a grill. Ever tried making eggs or pancakes on a grill? I thought so.

After hours of research and weeks of diligent testing, I compiled a list of the best portable griddles that are perfect for every need, preference, and budget:

The GGC2030M by Razor Griddle is the ultimate portable griddle (or flat top grill, whatever you prefer) that you can get for this kind of money – it’s also my favorite.

It performed so well, I already declared it one of the best griddles for camping.

Compact Yet Spacious

Despite its compact size and portability, its 318 square inches large cooking area is big enough for:

  • 21 burgers
  • 17 pancakes
  • 10 steaks

Which is more than enough for a group of 3-5 people.

There’s No Need to Carry It

It comes with its own cart and 2-wheels so you can transport it with ease. Also, there’s no need to place it on an elevated surface.

The cart folds up easily which greatly reduces space. This is perfect for storage and when you have to load it into the trunk.

You can also use the griddle in your backyard, deck, patio, balcony,… instead of buying a separate freestanding model.

Powerful and Durable Burners

This baby comes equipped with 2 stainless steel burners capable of outputting 10,000 BTU each, or 20,000 BTU combined.

Despite its somewhat small BTU rating, it makes beautiful and tasty sear marks on burgers and steaks.

Also Features a Side Shelf

Side shelves are a bit of a rarity with portable griddles. This is why it deserves a special mention. Also, it features a towel rack. I also placed several tool hooks on it for hanging utensils (keep in mind that I had to purchase these hooks separately).

The shelf has another function: transporting handle.

The Lid Is Also Included

This really comes in handy when you have bugs flying around you. It’s also great for melting cheese and keeping the juices in.

What’s more, it covers the griddle top when not in use, protecting it from the elements.

Cleaning Is a Breeze

Most of the excess grease and oil drips into the cup below which you can remove from the griddle and easily clean.

The griddle itself is also super easy to clean. I just cover the entire cooking surface with water and scrape off any residue.

What I Don’t Like About It

The thing arrived damaged (the lid had a noticeable dent) and a few screws were missing.

Pros

  • Foldable legs
  • Portable
  • Compact
  • Comes with a lid and side shelf
  • More than enough cooking space
  • Easy to set up and clean

Cons

  • May arrive damaged with missing pieces

With the Coleman RoadTrip 285 at your side, you’ll be able to cook anything and everything you desire.

I was so impressed by its overall performance that I already featured it as one of the best portable grills for camping.

Interchangeable Cooktops

By default, the RoadTrip 285 is a grill. But in this case, it comes with a cast iron griddle that you can combine with the grill grates.

This feature turns this model into a grill and griddle combo. Double the fun for the price of one.

Additionally, you can also purchase a stove grate (about $35) and combine it with grill grates or the griddle. You can’t use all 3 at the same time, though.

Combined Cooking Area of 285 Square Inches

A bit smaller than the Razor Griddle above but it still has enough space to feed about 3 people.

The cooking area is made from two 142 square inches smaller ones that can be either grill grates or griddle top.

Foldable Cart Design

Collapsible legs and wheels make this baby easy to transport, store, and use.

Once done cooking, you just fold it up and drive it around like luggage.

Powerful, Reliable Burners With a Reliable Ignition System

Featuring 3 adjustable burners with a total capacity of 20,000 BTU, this griddle will preheat in a blink of an eye while also distributing the heat evenly across the entire surface.

Instead of a regular Piezo igniter, this one features Instatart Technology which is quite an improvement as it is more reliable and durable.

Built-in Thermometer

You don’t see this every day on a griddle.

Easy to Clean Cooktops

Because the cooktops are removable, you can easily clean every nook and cranny.

I wait until I get home, and then just soak them in vinegar for a couple of hours. This makes my life a little bit easier.

What I Dislike

The inside of the grill is a bit trickier to clean than the cooktops. If you’re the kind of person that likes to clean every square inch, this will take a chunk of your time.

Don’t be surprised if the lid latch breaks. It’s quite flimsy.

Be careful how you lift the thing. It’s a bit heavy.

Pros

  • Grill griddle combo
  • Large cooking area
  • Foldable legs
  • 3 burner
  • 2 side shelves
  • Easy to set up, take down, and transport
  • Built-in thermometer
  • Interchangeable grates

Cons

  • Cheap lid latch
  • A bit heavy
  • Not easy to clean up on the inside

This 22″ griddle from Monument Grills (model 55000) is an excellent budget choice for the more expensive brands.

Fits 12 Burgers

Despite its compact size, it packs quite a punch with its 312 square inches large cooking area.

Durable and Lightweight

The entire thing is made from thick heavy-gauge stainless steel that’s quite resistant to the elements. One exception is the griddle top which is made from hot-rolled steel. It’s still resistant to rust, though.

Fast and Even Heating

This griddle features 2 H-style burners with a total heat output of 15,000 BTUs.

It heats up pretty fast and there are no hot or cold spots.

Other Reasons Why I Put It on the List

  • Comes with a lid
  • 5-year warranty on burners
  • non-slip legs

What Needs Improvement

A temperature gauge would be nice. The company won’t go bankrupt if they install one – they cost only a couple of bucks.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Sturdy
  • Comes with a lid
  • Super easy to clean
  • Even heating
  • Spacious cooking area

Cons

  • No temperature gauge

This complete grilling station from Flame King is an incredibly convenient griddle that’s perfect for RVs, motorhomes, tailgating, and even backyard cooking.

Versatile Hanging Rack

It comes with a unique rack that can be either mounted directly on your RV/trailer or made freestanding.

The rack is easily removable so the griddle can be used as a tabletop.

Feeds up to 4 People at Once

On its 260 square inches large griddle top I was able to fit:

  • 9 burgers
  • 4 steaks
  • 9 pancakes
  • 12 eggs

What I really liked about the griddle top is that’s completely non-stick. Nothing sticks to the surface which makes cleaning a breeze.

Even Heat Distribution

Despite having a single 12,000 BTU burner, this thing heats up fast, is able to make beautiful sear marks, and distributes heat evenly across the entire surface.

Simple to Clean

Being non-stick, you won’t have any issues with cleaning the griddle.

Also, all of the gunk gathers into the grease cup which is spacious, easily removable, and easy to clean as well.

Other Notable Mentions

The mounting rack is sturdy despite looking flimsy.

The feet are non-skid and removable.

The Cons

You cannot connect the griddle to your RV’s propane tank. You’ll need to purchase a separate adaptor.

The griddle top scratches easily. Avoid metal utensils as much as you can.

Pros

  • Spacious
  • Comes with a special rack
  • Durable
  • Easy to clean
  • No hot and cold spots

Cons

  • Cannot be directly connected to the RV’s propane tank
  • Griddle top scratches easily

Having issues with your propane tank or are you just a fan of electricity and the convenience it brings? Then this electric griddle by Dyna-living is a perfect choice.

Even More Convenient Than Propane

Unlike propane tanks/bottles, electricity is always available if you have an outlet nearby. You won’t run empty unless there’s a power shortage.

Powerful Heating Element

The griddle comes equipped with a 3000 W heating element that heats up quickly and sears even the toughest steaks.

Its high temperature range of 122-572℉ (50-300°C) greatly increases the griddle’s versatility. You can cook anything from eggs, and pancakes to burgers and steaks.

Comes With a Gift

There’s a spatula and a pair of brushes included with the package.

Durable and Sturdy

Made from durable heavy-gauge thickened stainless steel, this flat top grill will last you for quite a while.

I’m using it almost every day now for the last 2 years and it has never let me down.

Cleanup Is Surprisingly Simple

At first, I thought I was going to need more time to fully clean the whole thing but it turned out I was wrong.

Despite being bare stainless steel, cleanup was a breeze. A few drops of water and a sponge – that’s it.

The Bad Stuff

Quality control is terrible. I received mine damaged upon arrival and I’m certain you’ll get the same. Inspect every inch of the griddle and immediately notify the seller.

Heating isn’t completely even. There are a couple of minor hot and cold spots.

Pros

  • Generous cooking area
  • Super easy to clean
  • Powerful heating element
  • High temperature range
  • Durable

Cons

  • May arrive damaged
  • Hot and cold spots

What to Look For in a Portable Griddle

Consider these factors if you want to make the most out of your griddle.

Weight & Size

Portable griddles should be lightweight and compact in size.

This means that freestanding models are more or less out of the question.

Most single or double-burner tabletop griddles are small and lightweight enough to be carried by a single person.

Another option is a griddle with a collapsible wheeled cart. These not only make the griddle big enough so that you can cook at a comfortable height but also makes it easier to transport. Because it’s on wheels, you don’t have to carry it.

Cooking Area Size

While most portable tabletop griddles have a cooking area between 200 – 300 square inches, I strongly suggest you still take this factor into consideration.

It’s not worth buying a 3-burner griddle that has a 300 square inches large cooking area if you’re planning on going solo. The same goes for buying a teeny tiny single-burner griddle with a 100 square inches large cooking area if you’re planning on going tailgating with your friends and family.

If you’re not sure, choose a model that has between 200 – 300 square inches. This is neither too big nor too small.

Heat Distribution

Even heat distribution is just as essential as the price, size, and other specs.

Some manufacturers claim that their griddles distribute heat evenly but when you fire it up, you’ll notice that the heat is concentrated just below the burners.

Always double-check with reviews from other people who have actually tried it.

Be aware that some griddles worth about $200 won’t 100% distribute the heat evenly so don’t go OCD here. A few models featured here also have hot and cold spots but they are almost negligible.

Ease of Cleaning

The less time you spend cleaning and seasoning the griddle, the better.

Most models do have a Teflon or similar coating that makes it nonstick and, therefore, easy to clean. But you’ll still need to check if this coating is thin and if it’s compatible with metal utensils.

Some manufacturers cheap out on the coating and add a really thin layer that will start flaking the moment you’ll start cooking.

Extra Features and Accessories

Some portable griddles come with really neat stuff that makes your life easier. These include:

  • Lid
  • Lid thermometer
  • Collapsible cart with wheels
  • Adapters for various propane tanks or RV
  • Propane hose
  • Tool hooks
  • Towel rack

These are all very useful, but they may also affect the overall price.

Temperature Range

Some models get hot even at the lowest temperature setting while some can’t get hot enough to sear a steak.

Check for manufacturer specs and most importantly, reviews. These are much more accurate than anything.

Don’t look at just the BTU rating. Bigger doesn’t always mean better.

Budget

I realize that money is tight but don’t go for the cheapest griddle you can get.

It sounds like a nice idea at first but you’ll most likely throw it away within a year. I’m speaking from experience.

It’s best to give a couple of bucks more for a durable and reliable griddle that will last you for years. This is much more economical in the long run.

Conclusion

Having a portable griddle that will accompany you anywhere you go is one of the most satisfying things in life – at least for me – because you can cook virtually anything you would at home in the kitchen.

This list contains the 9 best portable griddles money can buy.

Here’s a quick recap of the products featured here:

The Razor Griddle and the Coleman RoadTrip 285 both feature a collapsible cart with wheels, 2 burners, and a spacious cooking area. The RoadTrip 285 goes a step further and features both a griddle top and grill grates.

Campers looking for a tabletop griddle should consider either the Monument Grills 55000 or the Hisencn ‎HSG2202H.

The Flame King YSNFM-HT-100 is a unique model because it features a unique rack that can be mounted on an RV or folded down to make the griddle freestanding.

Folks with electricity nearby may want to try the Dyna-Living electric griddle.

I didn’t forget the followers of Blackstone and Camp Chef and included the Blackstone 1939 and the Camp Chef Expedition: the best models I could get my hands on. Both feature adjustable legs. Blackstone also features a side table and lid while Camp Chef is a stove and griddle combo.

Last but not least is the Le Creuset L2066B-20, a reversible grill and griddle pan that can be used both indoors and outdoors.
